Rethinking a streaming game service from the ground up
We redesigned the OnLive multi-platform gaming service with a new product UX and brand relaunch. We created an immersive environment that worked at any scale — from mobile to TVs. The goal was to let users feel like they were always a part of gameplay even while browsing. OnLive was bought by Sony in 2015.
Interaction design lead, 2013
OBJECTIVE
OnLive was a gaming platform and gamer community that was losing market share to competitors like Twitch. Their revolutionary streaming technology was lost in a hard-to-use, dated UI. They approached Method to overhaul their gaming service and rethink their brand.
APPROACH
After defining the experience principles of amplifying gamer presence and seamless gameplay, we sketched and paper prototyped interaction models. We wanted to showcase OnLive's active community and ensure that a singular UX would scale across different device sizes and input methods - from touch to game controllers.
solution
The new gaming UX was designed to serve as an entry point to an immersive environment where players could engage through watching and playing games. Users were ambiently aware of others players as the interface visually reflected their presence. This solution facilitated serendipitous discovery & active participation and led to OnLive's purchase by Sony in 2015.
